History of Site
“The station depicted was opened by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Co. on 10th November 1883. It replaced an earlier structure situated a short distance to the west. The 1880’s station was similar in appearance to many of the company’s other buildings. Around the time the picture was taken, c.1920, the station-master was a Mr Pleasence, father of the actor Donald Pleasence. The station’s use has declined in recent years, and in 1988, following the removal of the booking hall and ticket office, the stationmaster’s house was sold off as a private residence. A ‘bus-shelter’ has since been provided on one platform for the convenience of passengers waiting for trains. Also, tickets have to be obtained on the train itself.”
