Don Gorge
“The River Don was once a major route for transporting goods across the country. Water traffic still uses this part of the River Don.
As you travel along this strech of the trail you will follow the riverbank, across farmland and skirt woodlands and villages. Look out for signs of our local industrial past and keep your eyes open for wildlife too.
The valley has a richly interwover industrial and ecological heritage. Sprotbrough Flash, a shining expanse of open water, was created by subsidence from coalmining at Cedeby and Denaby Main. The Flash is managed by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
It sustains over-wintering and breeding birds such as Little Grebe, Mute Swan and Tufted Duck. Local species thrive in the valley all year around.”
The quotes above were taken from DMBC’s (1999) ‘Trans Pennine Trail, The Don Gorge’ leaflet.
