King's Ferry & Burcroft

“This ferry enjoyed the title of ‘King’s Ferry’ and operated from King’s Wharf’ at Burcroft. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to discover the commencement date of the ferry or the origins of its name. Its purpose was to enable people to cross the River Don from Conisbrough to Cadeby or vice/versa. The alternative routes via Denaby or Sprotbrough were more time consuming. At one time the ferry-boat was operated by whoever was occupying the adjacent Ferry Farm. Later, when locks were installed to navigate a weir which was close by, the lock keeper also doubled as a ferryman. This practice ceased in 1972 together with ferry operations and an alternative link between Conisbrough and Cadeby was not provided.”
